Civil War Monuments and Historical Markers in the Shenandoah Valley

The Shenandoah Valley is a beautiful region of wooded mountains, rich farmland and flowing streams. But during the Civil War it was a pathway for armies, a battleground, and a strategic target. The struggle for mastery of the Valley led to countless skirmishes and battles - Winchester changed hands over seventy times - and finally to the scorched earth of The Burning.

This website tells the story of the Civil War in the Shenandoah Valley through its monuments, historical markers and historic sites.

Understanding the course of the war in the Shenandoah can be difficult. Battlefields from different years flow into each other and overlap. Land has developed into modern suburbs and businesses, obscuring or destroying the past.

But for years dedicated groups have been saving plots of land and placing signs and interpretive markers. Together, these tell an incredible story not just of two great armies struggling to decide which of their competing dreams of America would survive, but of the individuals and places that suffered through it.
