Stone Sentinels, battlefield monuments of the American Civil War

Winchester, Virginia

Winchester was the largest city in the Shenandoah Valley during the Civil War, just as it is today. So many battles took place around this strategic crossroads that there is disagreement as to how they should be named and numbered. The largest and costliest battle in the Valley was fought here on September 19, 1864.

Winchester is also the site of the Winchester National Cemetery and Stonewall Confederate Cemetery (part of Mount Hebron Cemetery), the final resting place of several thousand Civil War soldiers.
