Civil War historical markers and monuments in Strasburg, Virginia
Strasburg, Virginia is in a strategic position in the Shenandoah Valley. South of Strasburg Massanutten Mountain divides the Valley lengthwise, giving armies two parallel corridors of operation. The Manassas Gap Railroad reached Strasburg from Manassas to the east and continued around Massanutten and southwest to Mount Jackson, providing a vital military conduit - and target - during the war. North of town the commanding ridge of Hupp's Hill provided ideal defence against an advance from the south.
